Environmental Management Systems in Firms

The adoption of an Environmental Management System (EMS) is no longer only a matter of internal business policy of the firm. Certain legislative instruments now impose a duty on executive officers to: "supervise and do whatever possible to prevent the commission of offenses … by the firm or its employees". This duty places a burden on the EO to initiate an ongoing inquiry into the environmental performance of the firm. An EMS is, by design, aimed to achieve just such a purpose and to supply the necessary data.
